History
In the sixties – nineties of XX century, Togliatti was a technocratic city. VAZ, chemical enterprises, factories of heavy equipment industry etc. were the leading industrial areas of the city. This demanded, first of all, peopleware of experts and caused the foundation of the first institute of higher education – TolPi. In the early 90s Togliatti was not only an industrial city, but a cultural one. Jurisprudence, humanities and economic science were developing along with many business corporations. All these components resulted in the idea of creating educational institutions of nontechnical type in the city.
In September, 1995 Volzhsky University named after V.N. Tatishchev, the founder of Stavropol on the Volga in the XVII century, was established. The new majors, offered to the young generation of a city, attracted everybody’s attention. There were originally two faculties: the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Humanities. In 1997 VUiT obtains its first license, allowing the institution to conduct educational activities in the sphere of Higher education. By that time, the university had already had about 1500 students.
The year 1997 was that of the university establishing. New divisions and faculties appeared, new promising lecturers were involved. The university conducted the active advertising campaign, confirming the need in economists, lawyers, computer scientists, ecologists, journalists, and philologists to the city. In 2000 Doctor of Law, Professor V. A. Yakushin became the first rector-elect. In October, 2000 VUiT obtained State accreditation certificate.
Today VUiT has 6 educational faculties and 20 majors with about 3000 students; in January, 2002 the postgraduate study was opened. Our graduates are in demand in the city. The university plans to open new faculties, required in the city.
